Salon Ethos

Almost Done

There was something about having brownies in the oven that were almost done. I would impatiently stick the toothpick in and see that clearly, the brownies still needed more baking, just a mere 5 minutes or so. But because chocolate and me are BFFs, I was already formulating reasons in my mind that hey, they were almost done and in my book, that was good enough. I just had to rescue them from burning in the oven and welcome them with a glass of cold milk and a smile. I told you. Chocolate. Me. BFFs. Fist bump.

Mmm. Brownies.

Speaking of almost done, I am excited to say that my sister Kristina will soon be making the debut of her company's website.  Her work is awesome and I am proud that she is going to be able to share it with the world even more.

In the meantime, be sure to check out Salon Ethos on Facebook and stay tuned for more!

Happy Thursday!

Being Outside of The Zone

How do I describe it?

It's a weird, far away look when your eyes aren't exactly crossed from effort, but instead seem to be staring off at something in the distance with extreme focus. Almost as if they were using, for lack of a better term for you Star Wars fans out there, "the Force" to try and move an inanimate object. Sometimes, there's even a slight hint of their brow furrowing in concentration.

Have you ever seen a painter deftly take their paintbrush and million colors to a canvas? Have you ever seen a basketball player suddenly focus in with a burst of superhuman speed and almost break that basketball hoop as they slammed in the winning point? Or even a guitarist's intense facial expression when just the right strum of a string on their guitar produces the right pitch of a note they heard in their mind?

They are all in "The Zone" - that moment where all is right in their world and they are riding a wave of enjoyment where their talents & skills align in perfection and as a result, produces something magnificent to share to the world. Whether it's a perfect parenting day or a great performance you put on as a musician.

It's an awesome place, "The Zone."  I've been there a few times myself as a photographer and it truly is all sunshine and perfection and chocolate - kinda like Disneyland happy, sans the overpriced lemonade. But on the flip side, because The Zone is so awesome, the times I am outside of it feels beyond frustrating. Like I'm flailing for a shred of encouragement that will serve as the creative oxygen my "photographer" lungs need. It sounds kind of nuts, but these are the times I feel creatively stuck and upset that all the practice and envisioning I did prior to a shoot is lost because something in me just froze.

It is in these areas outside of the Zone, I am left with the choice to grow and learn...or not. One of my closest friends is a basketball coach and it was a good thing I called her right when I was about to bring out the appetizers and balloons for my pity party - being held, where else? Outside The Zone.

She helped shift my thinking from: "sob-hiccup-sob-sob-SOB-hiccup-OMG-I failed at a photo shoot that was supposed to be nothing short of perfection, what's wrong with me?!"  into "Take baby steps next time and don't expect perfection for everything so soon / you are growing / you are learning / all of us have been there and yes we all have our challenging days, even coaches who coach others/ you can do this/ no, there's nothing wrong with you."

And she's right. *hiccup*

I say all of this because it sheds light on how I want to grow as a photographer. That the photo shoots I fumbled through are just as important as the ones that went perfectly and were carried out in The Zone of my creative world. Both experiences keep me pushing to learn, keep a hat of humility on, and ultimately grow and improve my craft. I would even reckon to say that this applies to you out there who are aspiring to be a better musician, a more effective coach, a better friend or even a better mother. That while being in The Zone is wonderful and everything you're doing is right and going perfect, being outside of it and having those rough days are equally as important because it helps you truly be the better coach/mother/friend/musician/athlete you aspire to be.

Whew. Kinda serious for a Monday, I know. =) On a lighter note, since blog posts are so much more fun with a photo, here's a sneak peak into the this weekend's photo shoot. As always, there's more to come, so stay tuned!

Mitch and Alia.

It was a Friday night at a local diner that I met Alia and Mitch to discuss their upcoming February wedding. They were finally going to have a church ceremony to celebrate their marriage (they’d had a smaller ceremony a few years ago) and wanted to have a photographer there to capture every moment of a celebration that has been long in the making. The clanking dishes and buzz of the restaurant patrons loomed over our conversation, but there was no mistaking the sounds of their happiness as they filled me in on the details of their wedding day and how they met.

It was during their high school days…the days of AOL chat rooms, prom seasons, and just the fun of being high school sweethearts. Alia met Mitch’s family before meeting Mitch and she laughed to remember the small details of their high school times together, down to the glasses she wore during that time. As she scrunched her face remembering those glasses Mitch just smiled and still declared “I like you with your glasses.”
She is more of the goofy laughter and he is the quiet smile that accompanies it. Together they are an example of what it’s like to celebrate love in everyday moments---raising their 3 babies together, him giving her his jacket when she’s cold during the photoshoot, and her making sure he eats vegetables every so often. (yummmm, broccoli!)

Mitch and Alia, thank you for giving me the opportunity to document this special day for you both. As an extra thank you, my dear hubby created a slide show of some of the special moments of your wedding day....hope you enjoy it!

May you both continue to celebrate love and life in the everyday moments the way that you already have.
With love,
Heartbox Photography

The guys and gals were rockin' it like no other that day. I love me some alleyway shots!

Amia Bakery provided their beautiful wedding cake...

Their reception was held at Century House and we had lots of time to take some fun shots before the start of the reception....

I. LOVED. HER. HAIR. 'Nuff said.

Alia's awesome hairstyle and hairpiece were designed by the ever talented Kristina Eugenio of Salon Ethos.

One of my favorite shots of them....

Spam Musubi and Some News

Happy New Year! I hope you and your loved ones enjoyed the Christmas break and are having a blessed New Year so far. It seems every year goes by faster and faster, all the more reason to put on the breaks every so often and smell the roses.  Or the hibiscus. The husband has been inkling for a trip to Hawaii again this year, so hopefully that will be something we get to do again this year.
Mmmmmmm. Spam musubi.
Anyhoo! These past few weeks have been a vacation for me and I can’t be more thankful. It gave me time to finally work on finalizing the website for Heartbox Photography. It also gave me a chance to finalize the tweaks on the past few photoshoots done in November and December. And it gave me time to eat more chocolate than I intended, hang with friends and family, cuddle my puppy, Kona a little more than I have been and talk my dear husband’s ear off at home as he continued to plug through working at home. Yes, he loves me!
It’s a new year and I’m so excited to introduce you to the official website for Heartbox Photograph!
I actually feel like waving my hands around in excitement like I’m 5 years old again who just got her first Cabbage Patch Kid! Because truly, after so much time and effort put into designing this site, it feels like Christmas again. With chocolate sprinkles on top.
The new Facebook page for Heartbox Photography can also be found here.
Below are a few of my favorite photos from recent shoots in November and December.  Thank you to all who have patiently waited I worked on the photos from their shoot. You guys rock!
Here’s to 2012 and new beginnings!

Where you been, yo?!?!

In honor of my last post….CHEEE-HOOOO and of course, Merry Christmas, ya’ll!

Just to give you a quick update (cuz I know you got Christmas parties to go to, chocolate to eat, and presents to wrap!)

This month has been a whirlwind of editing the last of the photoshoots of the year, building up a Facebook page to launch Heartbox Photography to the social media world, and tweaking a website to make the virtual storefront official.

For those of you who recently finished a photoshoot with me and, the blog write up by moi and album in Facebook of all your final shots are going to be available in January on Heartbox Photography’s new page. I’m slowly moving everything from Maria Abelaye and a Camera over and thank you mucho for your patience as this transition happens.

And here is just one photo of many, many more to come that I am currently working on.

Like the hair?

Mad skillz.

We Be Striking a Pose: Our First Styled Shoot with Salon Ethos

The clock read 5:00 a.m. Dun, dun, dun.

Five am??
Yes, 5:00 a.m.
Get up, Rona, let's go! Today's the first!

Those are the thoughts that prodded me out of bed early, (VERY EARLY) on a Sunday morning. I am the poster child for sleeping in, just ask my husband. Crusty eyes, drool and all. (how's that for beauty sleep?) But this particular morning was different. I actually popped out of bed energetic and ready to get out of the house. (After I took care of the crusty eyes, of course. )

Kristina of Salon Ethos and I have been planning these styled photoshoots for months and today was the first shoot of 3 we were doing. She was getting her hairstyling skills on for our models and I was doing my thing with the camera. We were very excited and though the weather looked questionable and cloudy, we knew that it was going to turn out just fine. At least, we hoped so.

I showed up at 6 a.m. to pick up Kristina and the minute she answered the door, I had to laugh to myself.  Kristina is a dedicated artist to her craft of hair, so why didn't it surprise me that her hair was completely done and ready to go, but her pajamas and make-up were still in the works? My sister was every bit as excited as I was, but the look in her huge eyes also said "oh my gosh are we really up this early?"

Yes, we are really doing this.

Our model was Claire, who you may remember from her photoshoot here.

Kristina of Salon Ethos worked her magic on Claire's hair and after a few hours of hairspray, girl talk, and doughnuts (big ups to Claire's husband, Jon for patiently enduring the hairspray fumes, picking up doughnuts, and ignoring girly chatter that probably interrupted his sports watching more times than he anticipated), we were ready to go.

And oh, when girls who love hair, fashion, and photography get together watch out world. Because despite the clouds, the wind, and rain, we be striking a pose. For realz.

I'm so proud and excited to present to you the skills of Kristina of Salon Ethos. Below are a few of my favorite shots.

You can view the entire shoot here on my Facebook page.
